AC question?
I am trying to do a quick budget for a foreclosed home (2100 sq ft LA) I just purchased. It has had the two AC condensors stolen along with all the copper although all the duct work looks fine. How much should I expect to pay to replace the units? I do not know the tonage of the previous units. I live in Florida and I believe they require at least 14 SEER? I would prefer Carrier or Trane. What is the penalty for stealing central air conditioners from people's houses?
I read a report in the police briefs section of the local newspaper where thieves have been stealing central AC condensors from people's backyards (usually vacant houses). They cut the line set (which is full of freon), and the electrical wire, then take the condensor and sell it for scrap metal. These things have a lot of copper in them. They cost the homeowner about $2500 to replace.
What are the penalties for stealing these?
I also know about a $10,000 fine that you can get for releasing freon into the air, if a person other than a licensed HVAC contractor removes one of these. Suppose the thief is dirt-poor, and has no way to pay the hefty fine. What happens then?
