Central AC repair or replace?
I called in someone to maintain my HVAC system and was told afterward that my entire heating and cooling system should be replaced including ducts. My system came with the house which was built in 1989. My house is 2100 square feet. Since I did consider replacement of the entire HVAC system, I agreed with the HVAC service person to arrange for someone to provide estimates. The person that did the estimate told me that the cost of AC replacement consisting of the condenser unit and evaporator coils would be around $6000. I was told that my furnace is still working and can be kept, but it is not up to modern efficiency standards. However, I was a bit skeptical since the person did not even try to look inside the furnace. In the end I only arranged for my ducts and vents to be replaced. I will wait and see if it makes any difference. Given the high cost of the replacement, I have decided to try to repair the condenser unit myself. I am looking at spending around $400 to buy the necessary parts to replace in the condenser unit. Hopefully, I can get a few more years out of the equipment. However, I am concerned that I might waste money here if my system breaks down completely in the near future. I only use the cooling system about 20 days a year since I moved to my house in 1993. I live in Los Angeles County and the weather is quite mild in my area. I do use the heating function for about 3 months each year. Frankly, I am more concerned about my heating system than my cooling system given that I use it much more often. I am not sure if the furnace is still safe since it has not been inspected before. Here are some questions: Is it better financially to repair or replace the AC system? Should I replace the furnace if I replace the AC system? Can I just replace furnace only and leave the old AC system in?
