wondering how heat pumps work?
I just had a heat pump added to my house and replaced the gas furnace. Previously I only had gas furnace. Now I have central air and heat. So furnace is a backup to heat pump if it gets really cold. I was wondering why is it in the morning the temp says 64 in my house although I set thermostat to 68 overnight? The heat pump seemed to run all night but why didn't the temp keep up? Also when do I know when the furnace kicks in? The temp dropped to teens last night. I don't see a green or red light on my thermostat

the Maintenance took my smoke detector out my apartment and didn't bring it back!?
My central air and heat has been out since late summer 09. it continues to go out but they last time it went out was last week. after going back and forth with the landlord they finally came and supposedly fixed it two weeks ago. well when they did that they took my smoke detector out my house and never brought it back. i didn't realize it was gone until my sister told me. so my heat went out again last week and i asked them to come fix it and to put my smoke detector back in and the landlord stated she would. Well i get home thursday but before i did i called and asked if they fixed everything and they said yea so i went home and noticed the heat working and didn't think about the smoke detector until that sunday morning i woke up from my nose burning from smoke. some one had mistakenly put my wood cutting board in the oven and left the oven on broil. which started a fire. i woke up out my sleep and my house was smoked out. my heat is out again, and i not sure how to go about handling this with my landlord. it's illegal in mississippi to not have a smoke detector but i have no clue why they took mine out and haven't returned it. what do i do?

I can't figure out what is wrong with my heater side of my central air and heat.?
I am having trouble with the heater to my house and can't figure out what needs to be part needs to be replaced. I have a Fraser & Johnston Co. central air and heat with a Robertshaw ignition control unit which I believe is original to the house which was built in 1978. When the heater comes on first thing in the morning it only blows air but with no heat. I went on top of my roof and pulled off the access panel to the heater and found the ignitor was clicking even after the pilot light was already lite. So it seems that it isn't letting the burners click on to to heat the furnace. So what needs to be fixed or replaced? Please help me out

What does "individually controlled central heat" in an apartment imply?
I'd like an apartment where I do not share vents with other tenants. That is, if they cook, smoke, paint, clean, or do anything else that will smell up the air or put toxins into it, I don't want it coming in through my vents. Would individually controlled central heat necessarily (or almost certainly, anyway) imply that I wouldn't have any shared vents with other tenants of the building? Also, how likely is a place with this sort of heat to have a similar system for central air conditioning? I don't know enough about construction to know if central air and heat are commonly installed together using the same ducts. If the air isn't centralized, it won't even be an issue. I just don't want to find that I do have shared vents due to there being common vents for ac but not for heat, or something (though that seems unlikely in my opinion). Thanks!
