Any heat and aircondition person out there? Help!?
It is 50 degrees outside. I have my heat set up to 70 but the thermostat says 65. The heat pump never shuts off and most of the time is blowing cool air and once in a while warm air. Our bill has been $175 and $200 consistently since the beginning of the year. Prior to that it was $80's. Earlier this summer we had to have our heat pump serviced because it was out of freon and it was blowing hot air in the summer (the coils had ice). Do we need a new heat pump? Ours is 10 years old. (Oh, I just put the emergency heat on to see what would happen and the heat pump shuts off but the emergency light is on). I've never used emergency heat so I don't know exactly what it is suppose to do.

Is electric space heaters more cost effecient versus heat pumps powered by furnace in a smaller space?
I live in a small 900 sq. ft. home. My heat pump quit working and now I am using small space heaters which seem to heat my home better than the heat pump. I am using a total of 3 1500 watt electric space heaters that cut on and off according to degree of temperature in my home. I don't want to make my electric bill sky rocket, so I am trying to decide whether to go ahead and get my heat pump serviced or to wait and keep using the small heaters. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

Do I need to have my heat pump serviced?
I pay the power company about less than $10.00 a month in case my heat pump brakes and they will fix or replace it. Do I still need to get it serviced and how often?

Overcharged for home AC - Heat Pump Service?
My AC didn't work when we turned it on, so we had an HVAC guy come out. He charged us $470 for the visit. He was here with one other guy for 2 hours and put 5lbs of freon in our system. His diagnosis was that our system was empty (of course) of freon. During the rest of his visit, he cleaned the inside coil, cleaned the condensate pump, checked for leaks, etc. In essence, I got a bit of a cleaning and 5 lbs of freon. Does this sound high? My wife was here and wrote the check, so I wasn't around to ask questions. I was shocked to have paid so much for this service. Should I be?
