A further factor to consider is how quiet the unit is. You want to buy an unit that is as quiet as possible, particularly if you are going to use it at night.

old air conditioners, fire?
I was using a very old air conditioner until last year when it melted my outlet. It almost started a fire. I do not know the BTU's or watts but I would like to buy a new portable conditioner. I am worried about if I should because of my previous issue. Because it was old I had heard that older AC's use more power. Should I worry about this if I buy a portable one? Is it likely this will happen again if I use another outlet. I intend to plug it in to a power bar which will trip if overheated. I am not sure if I have weak outlets but I live in a community of townhouses where there are 300 units and most people have AC's and there have been no fires so I assume it was just the old AC but can not be sure. I would love if someone who is knowledgable could give input. It was a very heavy metal AC which read, use only on single circuit outlet. Very old vs a new portable AC about 9,000 BTU's is what I would like. Thanks

Which one of these 2 air conditioners is better?
I'm living in the desert and my place does not have a air conditioner. So it's unbelievably hot. Since I can't install a window air conditioner, I have to get a portable one. I don't know anything about air conditioners though. How do i clean this portable ac unit?

My sister said to hose it down??? I don't think it's safe.
