Can you replace a Daikan heat pump condensing outdoor unit with a furnace and AC unit?
We have a 2 story rental house with a furnace upstairs but the basement is heated with a Daikan heat pump condensing outdoor unit that feeds 4 interior basement units. The repair company can't find a replacement compressor, so to get it fixed it would cost $12,000. We're trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to install a furnace/AC in the basement instead. Any ideas?

How should I dispose of an A/C compressor?
My partner and I installed an American Standard condenser that wouldn't start. We got a warranty replacement compressor and installed it. All was good in the world again. Five years later, I decide to clean out a seldom used part of the shed, and there lies the removed compressor. I'm not contracting anymore and my partner has moved. Obviously, the warranty return refund is gone. I was the bookkeeper... what an idiot. :( So what is the best disposal method? Do I take it to the local waste management company? Would they accept my signing a recovered tag five years later (I'm 40 CFR certified)? Or should I try to return it to American Standard? "Being a HVAC contractor as you are should know these things" Was that dig at me? I know the federal law. I've had my EPA cert since '94. I didn't suggest putting on the curb... others did. There is no problem with the legality of my taking the unit to the same place Joe Citizen disposes of their refrigerators. I'd just like to avoid the $50 disposal charge. One, because I'm cheap. Two, they wouldn't actually recover anything... I did that when I removed it five years ago. I'm just interested to know if there is a smarter way of taking care of this.
