Proper Maintenance to Avoid Expensive Air Condition Repair

While some air condition repair may be costly, it is typically still less expensive than whole system replacement. Having a fully functional air conditioning and heating system is a luxury that people sometimes take for granted. Proper, routine maintenance is the best method for prolonging the useful life of your system. In areas with extreme temperature changes, having a working system is not just important for personal comfort. It can actually be essential for survival. There have been instances in which the residents of a home have died due to heat exhaustion or hypothermia. These types of conditions are easily avoidable by properly maintaining your home's HVAC system, and by quickly handling your heating and air condition repair.

There are six main types of air conditioning systems. Central air is common in newer homes, but there are two different types you may have. A single package unit consists of a condenser and blower together located inside the home. This type is not common because the condenser creates high noise levels, which can be kept outside of the home with a split system. The condenser in a split system is located outside and the blower is inside, typically in the attic. Pipes run from the condenser to the blower carrying refrigerant, which cools the air traveling into your home. In single package and split systems, proper ductwork is required to deliver the cool air to each room.

In smaller homes and apartments, portable units and window units may provide adequate cooling and be less expensive to operate and maintain. They can typically deliver cool air to about 500 square feet of space that is directly outward from the location of the unit. Another type of ductless unit is a wall mounted air conditioner, commonly found in hotel rooms. The last type is an evaporator, or swamp cooler, which uses water vapor to cool the air as it passes through the unit. Each type of unit operates in a different way, but all of them require routine examination by a professional.

Some simple problems that cost very little to fix can cause the unit to struggle to work properly and lead to more serious air condition repair. One of the simplest types of maintenance involves checking the levels of refrigerant. If the unit is low, it will not operate efficiently, but your repairman will simply add the correct amount and type of cooling agent to fix the problem. With systems that incorporate ductwork, routinely changing duct filters will also prevent larger issues. Filters should be changed more often in homes with several furry pets or in dry, dusty climates. You may also want to have a professional inspection of the ducts to make sure they are clean and clear of debris.

When you are in need of air condition repair, it is important to find a trustworthy technician to take care of the problem. Unfortunately, you always have to be careful to avoid having someone take advantage of you. There are some companies that exaggerate problems to charge unsuspecting customers more money. Find a company or professional with good customer satisfaction ratings and fair prices to avoid unnecessary spending and unhappiness with air condition repair.
