Waiting for the air condition company to come out and fix your unit can be a drag. A/C has a magical tendency to go on the fritz exactly when you need it most, which means you've probably consigned yourself to not getting much sleep in the meantime. Perhaps you've thought about taking yourself and your family to a hotel, but that's terribly inconvenient and many people can't afford a hotel room fee when they already have the cost of the repairs looming over them. The only choice, for many, is to simply make the best of it. Here are some ways you can do just that.

First of all, fans are your best friend when it comes to waiting for the air condition company to make its way out to you. The more you have, the better your chances of getting a full night's rest. Double, and even triple up on them if you have enough to go around. Some stores even sell misting fans, although these are typically expensive and may not be practical for use inside the home. Still, they may serve you well out in the garage or on the back porch, where you can go for a respite from the heat.

Open your windows, if it is practical. Obviously, if you don't have screens up, this won't be a good idea. If you do, however, and you can get a cross-breeze going, you may find that you don't even miss your A/C. Of course, if you're the type that likes to close out the outside world this won't make a good solution.

Most people don't enjoy cold showers, but this is a great opportunity to take one. Take one right before bed and let yourself air dry. It might make sense to put down some towels so that you don't soak the bed with either the water from your shower or the sweat that comes with a night without A/C.

Remember to keep yourself hydrated, but not to the point where you'll need to get up multiple times during the night. Keep a cold glass of ice water by the bed. You can use this not only for drinking, but the cool condensation on the glass will feel nice against your hot skin.

Though it can be difficult to believe, try to remember that people lived without A/C for thousands of years and, in fact, people still do it today-many of them in warmer climates than you can imagine. While it's never pleasant waiting for the air condition company to come do its thing, at least you'll be able to appreciate what you have when that blessed sound of ventilated air comes rushing back through your home.

I need some electrical specification on this unit. it is a commercial Trane: model SXhfc6040 -variable volume air conditioning unit. I want to know what's the Horse Power rating or the full load current. It's a 3-phase 460 volts. Thanks

Is it possible for a home air conditioning unit to be the cause of its coils going bad?
My Mom owns a Trane air conditioning unit and has had nothing but problems with it. She had the coil replaced on it a couple of years ago. Now a technician is telling her that the coils are bad again. They are telling her that there is something in the environment, her sprinkler system (sulfur), which is causing it to go bad. Does this explanation sound feasible? She uses well water for her sprinkler system but has had this sprinkler system for nearly 20 years. Before she had to get a new unit about 3 years ago she never had problems with the coil. Is it possible that the air conditioning unit itself could be causing the coils to go bad? i.e, a Freon leak or something.

I have a 12 year old Tempstar unit that just went out. I really liked it, but I want to know if I should stick with the tried and true, or go with a Trane system. Anyone?

Replacing a 19-year old central air conditioning unit . The quote from Home Depot was $20K for 3 Ton SEER 16 Trane unit (all work and warranties). This seems outrageously high, but they would not leave paperwork behind to justify this cost. - Can you help. Rough idea of equipment costs and labor. ------------------------------------------ I see equivalent Goodman units online for less than $2K. I know this is an inferior equipment and it uses Freon, but I don't have a good idea how to adjust for better equipment. The high end manufacturers do not put their prices on-line. ------------------------------------------ It is in Las Vegas and a 2000 sq. foot house with high ceilings. But this estimate was for one of two units.
